Bio-Circle-Sponsored Erikas Balkūnas Makes His Breakthrough
-

Young Lithuanian tennis player Erikas Balkūnas, supported by Bio-Circle, is successfully stepping up to a higher level of international competition. Over the course of two weeks, the 15-year-old reached the semi-finals of two ITF J30 tournaments held in Kaunas and Šiauliai, with both runs brought to an end by an opponent who went on to win the respective tournament. In the July events, Erikas successfully progressed through qualifying, advanced to the main draw, won his quarter-final matches and finished among the top four players on both occasions. In both semi-finals, he was defeated by Czech player Tomas Wirgler, who later went on to win both the Kaunas and Šiauliai tournaments.
ITF J30 tournaments are part of the International Tennis Federation’s junior tour and are open to players under the age of 18. Erikas’ results at just 15 years of age therefore show that he is already capable of competing successfully against older players with greater international tournament experience.
First semi-final in Kaunas
At the ITF J30 Kaunas tournament, held from 13 to 18 July, Erikas won all three matches in his qualifying group. He defeated Sweden’s Noah Roberte, Latvia’s Kristofers Kruminis and American player Attila Montague.
Finishing first in his qualifying group secured Erikas a place in the main draw. In the quarter-final, the Lithuanian defeated Sweden’s Oliver Wennerstad 6–3, 6–0 to advance to the final four.
In the semi-final, Erikas faced Czech player Tomas Wirgler. After a much closer second set, the Lithuanian was eventually defeated 1–6, 5–7. Wirgler later beat Latvia’s Tomass Dalderis in the final to claim the tournament title.
Another strong performance in Šiauliai
Just a few days later, Erikas continued his strong run at the ITF J30 tournament in Šiauliai, held from 20 to 25 July.
In qualifying, the young Lithuanian defeated Latvia’s Ricards Dzirkals, Finland’s Oliver Partanen and Poland’s Tymon Szamborski. Those three victories secured his place in the main draw.
One of the highlights of Erikas’ two-week run came in the quarter-final against Germany’s Richard Hiemann. After losing the first set, Erikas managed to turn the match around and claimed a 2–6, 6–3, 6–2 victory.
In the semi-final, he once again faced Tomas Wirgler. This time, the Czech player won 6–1, 6–4 before defeating Estonia’s Nikita Smirnov in the final to claim his second consecutive tournament title.
Erikas’ only defeats across the two tournaments therefore came against the player who went on to become champion in both events.
Results built on consistent hard work
Reaching two semi-finals in two weeks reflects more than Erikas’ sporting ability. Just as important is his capacity to maintain a consistent level of play during an intense tournament schedule, adapt to different opponents and prepare for a new challenge after every match.
Erikas has represented Lithuania in international competition for several years. He has been selected for Lithuanian national teams across different age groups, represented his country at the Tennis Europe Winter Cup team championships and competed at the European U14 Championships.
His achievements include Lithuanian U14 national titles in both singles and doubles, the Lithuanian U16 doubles title, as well as victories and podium finishes at international tournaments.
However, the results seen on court are only one part of an athlete’s daily life. Behind them lie training sessions, travel, physical and mental preparation, the ability to learn from defeats and a constant drive to improve.
“We see not only what happens on court, but also all the work behind the scenes – the daily training sessions, the travel, the fatigue and the ability to refocus after setbacks. That is why reaching two semi-finals in a row is so encouraging. Most importantly, Erikas himself wants to improve, is not afraid of stronger and older opponents, and sees every tournament as an opportunity to learn,” says Erikas’ father, Andrius Balkūnas.
Erikas is now placing an increasing focus on ITF junior tournaments. His aim is to gain higher-level international experience, improve his position in the ITF junior world rankings and continue progressing towards professional tennis.
A partnership built on belief in long-term growth
In spring 2026, Bio Circle Balticum joined Erikas’ team as a sponsor of the young tennis player. The partnership is intended to support his long-term development and help him pursue his professional sporting goals consistently. An athlete’s career is not built on a single victory or one successful tournament. Genuine progress comes from daily work, discipline, the ability to recover after difficult matches and the determination to return to the court stronger each time. This is why supporting Erikas matters to Bio-Circle not only in moments of victory, but throughout his entire journey of athletic development.
“We are delighted not only by the two semi-finals, but also by the confidence with which Erikas is stepping up to compete against older players. Results like these are built on consistent work, discipline and a determination to improve. We believe in Erikas’ potential and are proud to be part of his sporting journey,” says Modestas Steponaitis, General Manager of Bio Circle Balticum.
Two consecutive ITF J30 semi-finals represent an important result for Erikas, but they are also just one milestone on a much longer journey. New tournaments, strong opponents and further international experience lie ahead, and Bio-Circle will continue to support the young athlete as he works towards professional tennis.
